…A soft cry from inside the room jolted me back to the present. A girl’s voice, weak and broken. I closed my eyes, taking a deep, shaky breath. The scent of stale smoke and something cloyingly sweet filled my nostrils. I was the doorman. I was the sentinel. And the weight of that complicity was already a burden I wasn't sure I could carry. But I had to. For now, I had to. The alternative was the sound of gunshots, and the chilling finality of oblivion.
