…The whisper came again, this time with a note of urgency. "They are coming. The guardians. You must hide." Elara clutched the key to her chest, her heart hammering. She had to find that door. She had to get out. But as she turned toward the sealed wall, a new sound reached her ears—the echoing tread of footsteps, heavy and deliberate, coming from beyond the chamber. She was not alone. And whatever was coming, she had a feeling it was not friendly.

Elara pressed herself flat against the nearest wall, the crystalline key warm in her palm. The footsteps grew louder, slow and measured, each one ringing with a sense of purpose that sent fear lancing through her chest. She scanned the shelves—too exposed. The chamber, for all its size, offered little in the way of shelter. To her left, a tall bookcase stood half in shadow; to her right, a stack of crates and peculiar mechanisms half-blocked a niche in the curving wall.

The orb on the pedestal pulsed, its glow now flickering in rhythm with her breath. She watched the entrance—no, not an entrance anymore, a wall—desperately seeking cracks or seams, anything to pry open. But it was as smooth as a mirror, impenetrable.

The whisper returned, cold as the stone beneath her feet. "Hide, Keeper. The guardians remember."

A sliver of memory flashed—her own reflection, distorted in a dark surface, the city behind her flickering like a dying candle. A voice—her own, or another's?—reciting words of power, forcing the guardians back. The sensation was gone as quickly as it came, leaving only the pounding of her heart and the certainty that she had done this before, somehow, in another life or another memory.

A slit of pale blue light appeared at the base of the far wall, just for a moment. The footprints were closer now, accompanied by a faint metallic sound, as if armor brushed against stone. Elara ducked behind the crates, tucking her knees to her chest. The crystalline key pressed against her skin, and she willed herself to become invisible.

The chamber door—she realized with a start—was not fully sealed. A crack ran along its base, just wide enough to glimpse movement beyond. Shadows flickered: two figures, tall and indistinct, their outlines blurring at the edges as if unreality clung to them. Voices—harsh, guttural, speaking a language she almost understood—bounced against the chamber walls. One word leapt out at her, burning bright amidst the rest: "Echo."

Something within Elara strained toward the word, an inner resonance that made her lips part in an unspoken reply. The orb answered with a shuddering pulse, and the shelf nearest her rattled, sending a cascade of tiny glass spheres rolling across the floor.

A shadow lingered by the door, shifting as if searching. One of the guardians bent down, its eyes—silver, lidless—raked the chamber. Elara held her breath as the gaze swept over her hiding place, the air crackling with silent detection. The other guardian raised a hand, hovering above the surface of the wall, and a thin line of golden light appeared, arcing from the orb to the key in Elara's grasp.

The guardian's head cocked, sensing the energy. Its mouth parted, uttering a phrase that sent prickles along Elara's skin. She understood: the key she held was a beacon; they could find her, wherever she hid.

The niche behind her narrowed, shadows thickening as if to shield her. Elara's mind raced—she could try to run, to use the key and search for the hidden door from her vision. Or she could confront the guardians, invoke the power humming in her bones, gambling on memory and instinct. Or, perhaps, she could try deception, blending into the unseen currents of the chamber, letting the city’s own echoes hide her presence.

The guardians moved closer. The golden thread grew brighter, stretching taut between her and the orb. Elara closed her eyes for a heartbeat, felt the echo ring through her chest, the city’s memories thrumming in her blood. The moment to act was now.
