A single, tattered buffalo hide lay slumped on the ground, its once vibrant pattern faded, its edges frayed. It was a symbol, stark and brutal, of their dwindling resources, of the harsh reality that had descended upon them. The exhilaration of victory had curdled into a bitter ache of loss. The price of defiance was proving to be a heavy one indeed, and the fight for survival had entered its most desperate, soul-testing phase.
