…Then, a soft, mocking laugh, like the rustle of dry leaves, echoed around him. He spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. And then he saw it. At the edge of the clearing, disappearing behind the thick trunk of an ancient oak, was a flash of coarse, hairy tail. It was thick, bestial, utterly alien. In that fleeting glimpse, a terrifying realization dawned. The beautiful voice, the seductive song, had come from a creature far more monstrous than he had ever imagined. The Huldra. He had been lured, not to safety, but to a primal danger, a predator playing with its prey. The euphoria evaporated, replaced by a tidal wave of pure, unadulterated terror.
