…He lowered his rifle, the weight of it a familiar comfort. He looked at Jedediah, at the defeated men, and then at his cattle, their familiar brands a welcome sight. The harsh beauty of the canyon, moments before a crucible of violence, now seemed to hold a quiet, almost mournful, peace. The echoes of the fight faded, leaving behind the vast silence of the West, broken only by the lowing of his recovered herd. Justice, for this moment, had been served. But Silas knew, with a certainty as deep as the canyon walls, that the road ahead was still long, and the determination required to walk it was as enduring as the dust itself.
