…The attack will come at moonrise. The night after the morrow. Kaelen sat up, the ember pressed against his chest. “We don’t have time for a celebration. The shadow is moving. She’s coming for the sanctuary.” Mira’s face went pale. “How long?” “Two days. Maybe less.” He stood, dripping, and tucked the ember into his pack. “We need to get back. We need to prepare.” Grit whined, looking toward the horizon where dark clouds gathered. Ignis bellowed a challenge at the sky. “Then let’s move,” Mira said. They ran, leaving the lake behind, the fourth ember warm at Kaelen’s side and the weight of what was coming pressing down on them with every step.
