…“And then?” Mira asked. “Then we find the fourth ember, hatch the egg, and save the world.” Kaelen smiled. “Easy.” Mira laughed, a genuine sound that cut through the gloom. “You’re as crazy as your dog.” “I’ll take that as a compliment.” They climbed back down the chimney, into the tunnel, and out into the thin mountain air. Ignis was waiting, wings folded, eyes alert. Grit’s distant bark echoed from the cave, a reminder that time was short. Kaelen looked at Mira, at Ignis, at the sky. The shadow was moving, but so were they. And this time, they had a guide.
