…Lyra smiled. “He’s a good guardian. Trust him.” Kaelen looked at his dog, his dragon, and the elder who had once been a rider. He felt the weight of their trust, and the weight of his own responsibility. But he also felt the thrill of the journey ahead. “All right,” he said. “Let’s get some rest. Tomorrow, we find the next ember.” Ignis curled up beside him, his scales warm, and Grit flopped down at his feet, snoring within seconds. Lyra wrapped herself in a blanket, her eyes closed, but a faint smile on her lips. As Kaelen drifted off to sleep, he thought of the words from his vision: “Trust your companions, for they are the true strength.” He was beginning to believe it.
