…He pulled out his phone. October 14th. Glowing unchanged. Tomorrow he would wake up and the café would be full of strangers who'd never seen him before. Miles would be at the corner table with his dog-eared paperback, looking out the window, waiting for someone who, from his perspective, had never arrived. Nathan would walk through the door. The bell would chime. Miles would look up and smile. And this time, Nathan would know what he was walking toward. He set the phone on the coffee table. Screen down. Leaned back into the couch. Closed his eyes. On his left hand, his knuckle hummed. In his chest, something opened—raw and terrified and alive—and did not close.
