…His phone buzzed again. A calendar reminder for the 2 p.m. meeting he already knew would run twenty minutes over. Beneath it, the date glowed steadily, unchanged. October 14th. Nathan closed his eyes as the elevator rose. His burned tongue throbbed faintly. Against his will, his mind supplied the image of Miles at the table, one hand wrapped around his own cup, the other resting on the chair he'd pulled out—open, expectant, empty. The elevator doors opened. He stepped out into the hallway, turned left toward his office, and whispered the words into the quiet air like a prayer he didn't believe anyone would answer. "I just need to get through today. Again."
