…The ship lurched as he engaged the jump drive, the stars outside blurring into streaks of light. Bodyguard stared into the swirling vortex, his reflection a grim silhouette against the void. Thorne had called him a loose end. Perhaps he was. But even a loose end, when frayed just right, could snag the whole tapestry. And Bodyguard had a feeling he was about to do a lot of snagging. The hunt had just become infinitely more dangerous, and the darkness he was facing was no longer just the vacuum of space, but the chilling depths of human, or perhaps something far worse, ambition. He was on his own, a ghost in the machine, running from the shadows that had created him.
