…“Neither do I,” Tom said. “We’ll figure it out together.” Inside, they set up a makeshift nursery in their bedroom. Tom brought in the cradle they’d bought years ago for a friend’s baby shower and never returned. Sarah found a soft blanket and laid the baby down. He stirred but didn’t wake. They stood side by side, watching him sleep. The house felt different now—fuller, warmer. Sarah leaned into Tom, and he wrapped an arm around her. “We’re parents,” she whispered. “We’re parents,” he repeated. And in the quiet of the night, with the baby’s soft breathing filling the room, they believed it. For the first time, the future felt uncertain but also bright, like the first light of dawn.
