We’ll keep him safe tonight.” Sarah looked down at the baby, who had fallen asleep in her arms, his small chest rising and falling in the rhythm of trust. She felt a surge of protectiveness, fierce and unfamiliar. She had always wondered if she could be a mother. Now, holding this stranger’s child, she knew the answer was yes. The sound of sirens grew closer, red and blue lights flickering through the window. But Sarah didn’t move.
