…He pushed the door open, revealing a dark, descending staircase. “Welcome to the underbelly, Lyra,” he said, a hint of grim satisfaction in his voice. “Where the city’s secrets go to die. Or, if you’re lucky, to be found.” He stepped inside, and for a moment, I hesitated. This was the unknown, the deep dark. But the alternative was the Syndicate, and the gnawing emptiness of my own forgotten past. I took a deep breath, the scent of damp earth and forgotten things filling my lungs, and followed Kael into the darkness. The door creaked shut behind us, sealing us in.
