…I felt a new kind of power surging through me, not the boundless, effortless power of creation, but the fierce, desperate power of preservation. It was a struggle, a battle waged on the very edge of consciousness. The dimming star was almost gone, a faint blush against the encroaching black. But in that faint blush, I saw a flicker of hope. A single, defiant beat against the rhythm of my own impending awakening. I could hold on. I had to hold on. For her. For them. For this nascent, fragile universe that had, in its own way, given me a purpose beyond my own lonely existence. The fight had just begun.
