…The scent of their fear, a sharp, metallic tang, filled the air, mingling with the dying embers of their stolen night. Gregor’s eyes, wide with terror and a desperate, unyielding love, searched the shadows for a glimpse of his beloved, a desperate hope that she, too, had witnessed this violation. But Katja was no longer there. She had vanished, a ghost in the encroaching darkness, leaving Gregor to face the wrath of an Emperor whose heart knew no forgiveness, and whose justice was as swift as it was brutal. The guards hauled him from the chamber, his cries fading into the labyrinthine corridors of the palace, a desperate echo of a forbidden love now condemned to an unknown fate.
