…Kira didn’t answer. She stared at the screen, at the words that made her feel like she was being watched even now, in her own living room. Josh stood up. “I’m going to check the perimeter. Lock the doors behind me. Don’t open for anyone.” “Josh—” “I’ll be right back.” He stepped outside. The door clicked shut. Kira locked it and pressed her back against the wood. Beside her, Carol wrapped an arm around her shoulder. Outside, the evening settled in. The streetlights flickered on one by one. Josh returned ten minutes later, shaking his head. “Nothing. No one.” But the message remained on Kira’s phone, a cold reminder that William was always one step ahead.
