…“Mom, I can’t have you there every day.” “Then I’ll call in sick from my job. This is more important.” Kira didn’t argue. She was too tired. She went upstairs and sat on the bed, the phone in her hand. A new notification lit up the screen. She opened it. The message was brief: Tell your mother I said goodnight. Her blood ran cold. He knew she was home. He knew her mother was here. She dropped the phone as though it had burned her. Downstairs, Carol’s voice rose on the phone, calling the police again. Kira wrapped her arms around herself, staring at the screen where the message still glowed. The question she couldn’t answer echoed in her mind: How much does he know?
