…The afternoon passed without incident. At five, she packed up and walked to her car, scanning the lot. Nothing seemed out of place. She drove home, the familiar route soothing her nerves. Her mother had dinner waiting. “How was today?” Carol asked. “Weird. But I made a big sale.” “That’s wonderful, sweetie.” They ate, the conversation light. Kira almost let herself relax. But after dinner, as she checked her phone, a new text appeared: I enjoyed our talk. Let’s do it again soon. She stared at the screen, the dread settling back into her chest. William Rainor wasn’t a one-time customer. He was a thread that had just been tied to her life, and she didn’t know where it led.
