…Later, after statements were taken and Brian was released with a warning, Kira stood outside the station with Josh and Carol. The night air was cool and clean, the stars bright overhead. “What now?” Carol asked. Kira looked at Josh. He smiled, his eyes soft. “Now we go home. Your real home.” “I don’t even know where that is anymore,” Kira admitted. “It’s wherever you decide,” Josh said. “But I’d like it to be near me.” Kira laughed, a sound that surprised her. It felt good. “I think I’d like that too.” She looked up at the sky. For the first time in what felt like forever, she wasn’t afraid. The nightmare was over. And tomorrow, she could start living again.
