…“Kira,” Josh said gently. “We need to go.” She nodded and opened the door. The evening air hit her face, cool and damp. The sun was still above the treeline, casting long shadows across the street. The patrol car sat at the corner, engine running. Renfro led them to her vehicle. “Get in. We’ll take the back roads.” As Kira climbed into the back seat, her phone buzzed one last time. She glanced at the screen. See you soon. She shut the door and locked it. The engine started. They pulled away from the curb. Kira watched the house shrink in the side mirror. She didn’t know if she’d ever come back. But she knew one thing for certain. William wasn’t done with her yet.
