…The clock on the wall read 4:47 PM. Sundown was still hours away, but the weight of his promise pressed down on her like a physical thing. Her phone buzzed one more time. You should have left when you had the chance. Now it’s personal. Renfro read it over her shoulder. “He’s escalating.” She turned to the officer. “Get the TRO expedited. And put out a BOLO for that sedan.” Kira stared at the message. The words felt final, like a door closing. But she wasn’t going to let him win. “What do we do now?” she asked. Renfro looked at her, a grim determination in her eyes. “We hold our ground. And we wait for him to make a mistake.”
