…Kira sank onto the couch. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out. A new message from William: Sundown. Don’t test me. She set the phone on the coffee table. The screen glowed in the dim morning light. “What do we do?” she whispered. No one answered. Josh sat beside her. “We figure it out together. You’re not alone anymore, Kira.” She looked at him. His eyes were steady. She wanted to believe him. But William’s words echoed in her mind. You can’t blame me for being curious. He knew too much. And he wasn’t done. Outside, a car passed. The clock on the mantel ticked. The sun climbed higher, and the shadow of the oak crept across the lawn.
