…Kira looked at the clock on the mantel. It was just past six. The sun was rising. Her phone buzzed one more time. She didn’t have to look. She knew what it would say. Josh took a step toward the door. Kira caught his arm. “Wait.” Another knock. This time, a voice followed. Low and calm, carrying through the wood. “Kira. I know you’re awake.” It was William. The room was frozen. Kira’s heart pounded so hard she could hear it in her ears. “I’m not leaving until we talk,” he said. “You can open the door, or I can wait out here all day. Your choice.” Kira looked at her mother, at Josh, at Aunt Louise. They were all waiting for her to decide. She took a step toward the door.
