…Sleep well, Kira. I’ll be watching. She showed it to Josh. He read it, jaw tight. “We’re not staying here tonight,” Carol said. “I’m calling my sister. We’ll go to her place.” Kira nodded, too tired to argue. She grabbed her bag and followed her mother out the door. Josh walked them to the car and stood by the driver’s window. “I’ll follow you there,” he said. “Make sure you arrive safe.” Kira looked at him through the glass. “Thank you, Josh.” “Always.” As they pulled out of the driveway, Kira watched the house shrink in the side mirror. The streetlights flickered. She didn’t see a figure, but she felt his eyes somewhere in the dark, waiting.
