…His breathing became ragged, his eyes wide with a terror that seemed to consume him. He clutched the knife tighter, his knuckles bone-white. “We have to move, Malachi. Now. We have to go to her. Before they take you.” He grabbed my arm, his grip crushing. “They’re coming,” he hissed, his face contorted with a fear that was disturbingly real. “They’re coming for you, and I won’t let them have you. We have to meet them. We have to fight them.” He pulled me towards the door, his eyes blazing with a desperate, unhinged resolve. The hunted had become the hunter, and I was caught in the maelstrom of his final, terrifying descent.
