…But as I looked at her, I knew safety was a fragile illusion. The choices I had made, the futures I had closed off, the sacrifices I had already endured, had left indelible scars. The hum of the artifact was fading, replaced by a hollow ache, the phantom limb of a power I was relinquishing. The loom of sacrifice had claimed another thread, and the tapestry of tomorrow, though perhaps less grim, remained a thing of terrifying uncertainty. The path ahead was no longer woven by my hand, but I had to believe, with every fiber of my being, that it was a path worth walking, a path towards a future that humanity, in its flawed, messy, beautiful way, would build for itself.
