…She dissolved into a mist, and the chamber fell silent. The spiral shard glowed on its plinth. Sofia picked it up. It was cold at first, then warmed in her grip. She looked at the door. It was carved with waves, and a single slot in the shape of a spiral. She inserted the shard. The door swung open, revealing a long corridor lined with columns. Water rippled on the floor, reflecting light from somewhere above. Sofia stepped through, and the door closed behind her. The city hummed again, louder now, as if welcoming her deeper into its heart.
