…He looked across the meager encampment at Maria, her face a roadmap of exhaustion, her body slouched with weariness, but her eyes, even now, held a flicker of defiance, a stubborn refusal to surrender. But even that flicker seemed to be dimming, threatened by the encroaching shadows of despair. The hope that had sustained them, that had propelled them through the initial chaos and fear, was now a fading ember, its warmth barely perceptible. The fear that they were simply waiting to die, to slowly fade away on this concrete island marooned in a drowned world, was no longer a whisper in the back of his mind. It was a deafening roar, an inescapable reality that threatened to swallow them all.
