He looked at Maria, her strong features softened by the fading light, her eyes reflecting a deep, quiet resolve. The old world was gone, dissolving into the endless water. What came next was a terrifying blank canvas. The gathering on the overpass had been a temporary measure, a pause in the relentless march of disaster. But the time for pauses was over. The time for movement, for a leap of faith into the uncertain future, was upon them. The planet was transforming, and humanity, in its scattered, desperate remnants, had to learn to transform with it, or be swept away.
