…Travis looked at Maria, at Ben, at Mrs. Gable. He saw the exhaustion, the fear, but also a flicker of something else – a desperate, nascent hope. The digital deluge had shown them the end of the world as they knew it. Now, standing before this scientist, they were being offered a glimpse of what might come next. The old world was gone, swallowed by the sea, baked by the sun. The new world was uncertain, terrifying, but it was also, perhaps, a place where they could learn to survive. The journey to the fire tower had been an escape. The journey beyond it would be something else entirely.
