…I sank to my knees, the artifact still clutched in my hand. It was cold now, inert, but the memory of its power, of the creature it had birthed, was seared into my mind. I looked at Anya and Lena, their faces etched with the horrors they had witnessed. I had saved them, yes. But at what cost? The war was far from over. But now, a new kind of war had begun, a war within myself, a war against the echoes of the hunger I had briefly, terrifyingly, controlled. The tides of this war had indeed been burned, but the ashes were a far more terrifying sight than the flames.
