…I looked at the artifact, now lying inert in my pack, its glow extinguished, as if it had expended its initial burst of energy. But I knew it wasn’t finished. It was merely waiting. And so was I. The war had taken a terrifying turn, and I, Janek, the Polish resistance fighter, was now the unwilling master of a grotesque, insatiable hunger that threatened to consume everything I held dear. The glimmering stone had brought not salvation, but a curse, and I was its grim, haunted keeper. The night was no longer just filled with the sounds of war, but with the nascent roars of a new, unspeakable horror.
