…“My paddle!” I yelled, my voice tight with panic. Tom didn’t hesitate. With a swift, powerful movement, he reached across the canoe, his arm brushing mine, and grabbed my paddle. He held it steady for a moment, his eyes meeting mine, a silent reassurance passing between us. Then, with a burst of strength, he maneuvered the canoe towards the sheltering rock, his paddle working in perfect sync with the one he’d just retrieved from my grasp. We bumped against the boulder, the violent churning of the rapids easing into a gentler flow as we found a pocket of relative calm. We were safe. Shaken, soaked, but safe. And we’d done it together.
