…It was intimacy of the worst kind. "Blood of my blood," Kaelen intoned, his voice layered with arcane resonance. "Heart of my heart. Bound by vengeance and desire, you are mine until the sun burns cold and the stars no longer shine." Valerius screamed. The sound tore from his throat, raw and animal, as the magic seared every nerve ending. He watched the world spin, watched Kaelen's storm-cloud eyes bore into him, and knew, with sick certainty, that he had not lost merely his freedom. He had lost himself. When consciousness slipped away, the last thing he heard was Kaelen's voice, almost soft, almost kind. "Welcome to your cage, little wolf."
