…"We need allies," Silas said. "The village cannot hold against a full assault." "Allies are scarce. But I may know someone. A witch in the city who owes me a favor. She may help." "Will she?" Aaron asked. "For a price. Everything has a price." Morwen poured them tea. It was bitter, but warming. Aaron's exhaustion caught up with him. He leaned against the wall, his eyes growing heavy. "Rest," Morwen said. "Tomorrow, I will guide you through the pass." Aaron nodded. He closed his eyes, and the shadow whispered again, softer this time. Soon, child. Soon. But for now, there was only the fire, the warmth, and the fragile hope that maybe, just maybe, they could make it through the night.
