…Back at Silas's, the old man was waiting. He looked at Aaron's torn clothes and the scratches on his arms. "You used the shadow, didn't you?" "I had to." Silas nodded slowly. "The first time is always instinct. Next time, it must be choice. Rest now. Tomorrow, we train properly." Aaron lay on a cot by the fire. Lyra sat nearby, cleaning her knife. The cabin was warm, the danger past. But sleep didn't come easily. The red eyes lingered in his thoughts. He closed his eyes and let the ache settle. For the first time since waking in that cabin, he felt like he wasn't running from the night. He was learning to fight it.
