Aaron looked at the fort, at the people he had gathered, at the hope they had built. He gripped the Heartstone, its warmth steady in his hand. "No," he said. "I will not give in." The Umbra Lord laughed. "Then you will die." The chapter ended with the shadow demons charging, their howls filling the air, and Aaron standing at the wall, the Heartstone blazing in his hand, knowing that the battle for everything had just begun.
