…Elara and William sat down, their hands still touching under the table. Maren placed a plate of pancakes in front of them, and Elara realized she was starving. "Eat," Maren said. "You need your strength." Elara took a bite, and the sweetness melted on her tongue. She looked around the table—at Lyra, who was teasing William; at Maren, who was bustling about; at Silas, who was studying the map with a furrowed brow. They were her family. Not by blood, but by choice. And beside her, William squeezed her hand. She squeezed back. The day stretched ahead, full of plans and questions and unknowns. But for now, she was content. For now, she was home.
