…“We should go,” Maren said. “This place is unstable.” They climbed back up the ladder, emerging into the daylight. The green light from the well had dimmed, but the crystal in Elara’s hand still shone. As they walked back to the cottage, Elara felt the weight of the task ahead. The bond with the falls hummed in her chest, and she knew what she had to do. “Tonight,” she said. “We go to the heart of the falls.” William took her hand. “Together.” She squeezed his fingers. “Together.” Behind them, the well stood silent. But in the shadows of the forest, a pair of eyes watched and waited.
