…Elara closed her fingers around it. The warmth spread up her arm and settled in her chest. She smiled. “Thank you.” Maren’s eyes glistened. “You are welcome, granddaughter.” They sat together by the water as the night deepened. Lyra brought a blanket and draped it over Elara’s shoulders. Kael built a small fire. Silas told Elian a story about the first guardian who learned to speak to the wind. The falls sang on. Elara leaned against her grandmother’s shoulder, the heartstone in her pocket. For the first time in months, she felt ready for tomorrow. In the distance, beyond the forest, the lantern flickered once. Then went dark. But Elara did not see it. She was home.
