…"Are you ready?" Seraphine asked. Elara looked at the falls, felt her father's presence in the spray, her mother's hand on her shoulder, her friends at her back. She thought of the humans who would never know how close they came to destruction, and she thought of Thorne, somewhere in the dark, laughing. "No," she said. "But I'll go anyway." The ground trembled again, longer this time. Somewhere deep in the forest, a wolf howled, and then another, and another, until the night was full of their voices. Elara took the first step into the dark. The falls sang behind her, a promise and a warning.
