…"The cost?" Lyra sobbed, her hands glowing as she reached for Elara. "The pulse is now part of her. She can never leave the falls for long. And Thorne... Thorne felt what she did. He knows she is the one." Elara opened her eyes. The sky above was blue, the moon gone. She felt tired, older than her years. But she also felt the falls' heartbeat in her own, steady and strong. "Then we fight," she said. "Together." Lyra pulled her into a hug. Kael nodded, jaw set. Mira took Elara's hand. And from the shadows at the edge of the forest, a figure watched. Not Thorne, but something older. Something that had been waiting for the falls to choose a guardian. It smiled, and walked away.
