…The respite was short-lived. The oppressive heat returned, the stench of decay clawed its way back into my senses, and the girl’s form began to warp once more. But something had changed. The fear that had paralyzed me for so long was beginning to recede, replaced by a flicker of resolve. I had seen a glimpse of her truth, a shard of understanding in the darkness. “Help,” I repeated, the word now imbued with a newfound weight. I looked at her, truly looked at her, and for
