…I didn’t sleep that night. The growls eventually faded with the first hint of dawn, leaving behind a heavy silence and the lingering scent of fear. The little girl, however, stayed with me. Her image was seared into my mind, a phantom etched against the darkness. I knew, with a certainty that settled deep in my bones, that my life in Harmony Creek had just begun, and it was going to be far more complicated, and terrifying, than I had ever imagined. The Black Woods had offered me a welcome, but it was a welcome steeped in shadow and the chilling echo of a child’s desperate run.
