…"Liar." Nina's voice was cold. "I can't have you walking out of here with stories. So I'm going to make sure you don't leave at all." The other women closed in. Elara backed away, but the guards had already disappeared. She was alone. "You think you're going back to your son?" Nina whispered. "Think again." Elara's heart hammered. She looked around for escape—the fence, the gate, anything. But the women surrounded her, their faces hard as stones. And then Nina pulled out a shank, crude and sharp, hidden in the folds of her clothing. "Help!" Elara screamed. But no one came. And the morning sun rose indifferent over the work camp, painting the dirt in shades of gold and blood.
