…“That’s not true,” Lina said, her voice cracking. “You’re isolating him. You’re using him.” Marcus’s expression hardened. “We are protecting him. You should go before I call security.” He turned and walked back toward the house, his silhouette growing small against the sprawling lawn. Lina gripped the bars, her knuckles white. She thought of the evidence she had submitted, of Sterling’s plan, of the appeal date that loomed. She thought of Elara, alone in that camp. And she whispered to the empty air, “I will get him back. I swear it.” The gate did not open. But she did not leave. She stood there until the sun set, a sentinel of hope, waiting for a crack in the iron.
