…The woods, when she looked at them from her kitchen window, no longer seemed like an impenetrable barrier. They seemed like a promise. A promise of something more. The wind rustled the leaves, a sound that had always been background noise, but now, it sounded like a secret being whispered, a secret only she could hear. The mapmaker, whoever they were, had left a puzzle, and Char’s Mom felt an undeniable urge to solve it. The quiet life, the predictable rhythm, suddenly felt like a cage, albeit a comfortable one. And the key, it seemed, lay just beyond the whispering woods.
