Beneath the Surface Storm

…Billy’s arm was around Jill, a gesture that was both protective and possessive. They were two lost souls adrift in a sea of concrete and despair, their compasses broken, their sails torn. The fleeting warmth, the temporary silencing of the storm within, had come at a terrible price. The shadows of their past had deepened, and the smoke of their addiction had begun to weave a thick, suffocating veil, obscuring any vision of a future, trapping them in a dangerous, self-perpetuating loop. The city slept, but for Billy and Jill, the night was just beginning, a descent into a darkness from which escape seemed increasingly impossible.
