…The decision had been made. The path, however solitary and fraught with peril, was laid out before her. She turned back towards the alcove where Billy slept, a flicker of pain crossing her face. She couldn’t save him. But maybe, just maybe, she could save herself. The storm beneath the surface of her life had reached its breaking point, and she had chosen to swim, even if it meant letting go of the one person she had believed would always be in the boat with her. The night air felt colder now, but somehow, a tiny spark of something akin to hope, fragile and uncertain, had begun to flicker within her.
